Mr Geoffrey John Keating MC 1914-1981


Born and educated in London. Of Irish parents , GJK's father Matthew was the first Irish MP to represent Ireland at Westminster.

GJK worked for the Daily sketch and the like as a photographer in the mid 30's ( Olley Air services great view of air travel; Duke and Duchess of Windsor 1936-37. )

When the Second World War broke out in 1939 just one Army Photographer GJK, and one camera man Harry Rignold accompanied the British Expeditionary Force to France.

(In October 1941 The Army agreed to form a corps of trained photographers & cameramen.)

Unarmed  he covered extensive coverage from the beginning to the end of the War ; over Europe, Cairo, Libya, Iran,

and back to France for the Normandy landings.

He witnessed the signing of the end of the war at Luneburg 1945. Decorated with  Military Cross , in Tobruk 1941. He captured Taormina unarmed in Sicily ; this has been documented in several  history books.

GJK  became head of the 8th Army Film and Photography Unit

with General Montgomery,  and was in the Desert Rats.

Desert Victory (1943) a film formed almost entirely from AFPU footage, it won an Academy Award for best documentary in 1943. 

The Imperial War Museum,London has a very vast archive of images he took.These images are in many folders that the public cannot see.


After the War GJK  worked for BP for 30 years. In PR and Photography in the field, he didn't have a desk. Firstly in Iran for 5 years then back to London where he made regular visits to the Middle East

He made an unparalleled contribution to Anglo- Middle East relations of that time in history. Left behind is an extensive Photographic archive of the Middle East from 1950-74.  The UAE and its rulers with the discovery of oil show a history .

Upon his retirement in  1974 at 60. He  started a property business , Barcley Consultants; which brought property in central London. 


GJK  had an fantastic sence of humor was very social & always bringing people togeather,  with his vast knowledge & contacts he was able to give politicians ,diplomats and the like advise . This on a very broad scale from Moscow to London, Middle East to Washington to Dublin.

He died aged 66,  he left a daughter Rima , & wife Suzy Shafto.

He was a very religious , a  strong believer in his Catholic faith.

He left  an unparalleled Photographic Archive , and many stories from people who had met and loved him.
